THE 5TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF AFRICA TOURISM DAY (ATD)
Africa Tourism Day (ATD) was founded on the 24th of May 2020 by Abigail Adesina Olagbaye, the founder of Sayari Dunia Sustainable Tourism Foundation (SDSTF) as an initiative to set aside a continental day to focus on tourism, recognizing its role and contribution to African economies, fostering understanding, unity, friendships, business and community development. The event was set up to demonstrate and showcase the alluring beauty of African destinations, the mesmerizing landscapes, didactic cultures, eclectic heritages and the power and creativity of 1.2 billion amazing people. To identify challenges, opportunities and to map solutions to the growth and sustainability of the tourism sector. The event debuted on the 26th of November in partnership with 22 organizations and media outfits including the Kingdom of Eswatini - based African Tourism Board.
The 26th of November, 2024 will mark the 5th edition of Africa Tourism Day hence it will be celebrated during the 2nd Africa Tourism Climate Action Forum ATCAF2024. A minimum of 50 African countries are expected at the momentous celebration on the 26th of November 2024.
2024 AS THE YEAR OF THE WOMAN
The year 2024 was declared as the Year of the Woman at the 2023 edition of ATCAF which held in Ado-Ekiti in partnership with the Ekiti state government in recognition of the role and potential of women as strategic partners and agents of change, and as incubators and accelerators of sustainable development. It is also a call to put women at the front and centre of climate policy making and implementation and to advocate for access to resources as panache to building climate adaptation and resilience and enable the just transition. This is vital as we gradually advance towards the middle of the UN's Decade of Action and halfway to year 2030 which is the target year for reducing global emissions and limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees.
Women are often the worst hit by the impacts of climate events, often suffering heightened gender inequality as climate extremes amplify inequalities, Gender-Based Violence, vulnerabilities, negative gender norms, during times of disaster hence, the need for their inclusion in climate leadership, policy making and solutions.
WOMEN IN TOURISM TRADE AND SUSTAINABILITY AFRICA (WITTSA)
